From Spuds to Mr Tumble: our composers' latest children's commissions
New and returning series across composer roster
Our composer roster is currently scoring a host of exciting new series and re-commissions. Here are the highlights:
Animation
- Supertato
Heading to CBeebies and BBC iPlayer is new comedy animation, Supertato (52x7’) to be scored by Sanj Sen (Danger Mouse) and co-writer Alex Ball.
Co-produced with BBC Studios and Tencent Video and based on the bestselling books by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, the show will follow the adventures of Supertato, the world’s first potato superhero as he tackles the mischievous Evil Pea in (where else) the supermarket aisles.
Writers are Andrew Emerson and Doug Sinclair with Blue Zoo and Plug-In Media providing the animation. Dom Minns series directs.
Our Vancouver-based composer Daniel Ingram (My Little Pony) is currently scoring Mattel Television’s animated series Deepa & Anoop (36x11') for Netflix.
Featuring songs throughout and starring seven-year-old Deepa and her colour-changing elephant Anoop, the duo help guests at Deepa's family’s bed and breakfast. The show airs soon on Netflix.
- Mighty Little Bheem special
Hot on the heels of the success of Netflix's Mighty Little Bheem series scored by Banks & Wag, comes a Taj Mahal special extended episode where, not surprisingly, Little Bheem manages to find some mischief when he and his family visit the iconic tribute to love.
Banks & Wag have scored all episodes of the hit series to-date (with 3.5bn YouTube views and counting) and will be scoring another animation series from the makers of Mighty Little Bheem later this year.
The original series first aired in 2019 and has become one of Netflix's most successful pre-school series to-date.
- JoJo and Gran Gran series 2 and 3
JoJo & Gran Gran (pictured), the UK’s first preschool animated series featuring a Black British family, will return to CBeebies for series two and three (88x11) following a double-win commission for BBC Children’s In-House Productions.
The animation tells the story of a four year-old girl and her fun and wise grandmother who cares for JoJo while her parents are working.
Since its unparalleled debut, JoJo & Gran Gran, based on the books created by Laura Henry Allain, has become a firm favourite with the preschool audience.
Helping to delight millions of fans are BAFTA-winning composer team Ellie Wyatt and Joss Peach (Tee and Mo, Pip and Posy) along with Jamie Salisbury (Lagging) who will be scoring music throughout the two series.
Live Action
- Lagging series 2
Moving onto live action, comedy series Lagging has been recommissioned for CBBC from the In-House drama team.
Written by BAFTA award-winning writer Dan Berlinka, the series is about gaming, friendship and growing up. Scored by Jamie Salisbury (JoJo and Gran Gran), the 15 part series is executive produced by Connal Orton and will film over summer 2022.
- Molly and Mack series 5
The hit series scored by Paul Honey with songs by Ellie Wyatt returns for its fifth and final series (13x14').
It centres around Molly (played by Mimi Robertson) who spends the summer helping her older brother Mack (played by Joshua Haynes) at a toy stall in The Big Hub, a community hall in the Scottish town of Bridgetown.
Actress and radio presenter Gemma Atkinson joins Nigel Clarke (pictured) on CBeebies series The Toddler Club (40x14') as they invite youngsters – and their grown-ups – to join in with the songs composed by Chris Branch and fun activities at home.
The Toddler Club is a Three Arrows Media production for CBeebies. The executive producer is Jon Hancock and series producer is Simon Hall.
Chris will also be scoring Ranger Hamza's Eco Quest from Hello Halo Kids. He previously scored Let's Go For A Walk featuring Ranger Hamza, also from Hello Halo Kids.
- Game On Grandparents
Paul Farrer will be scoring title and related music for new CBBC gameshow Game On Grandparents produced by Electric Robin.
- Something Special
Legendary composers Banks & Wag have recently started to score music for series 13 of Something Special starring Justin Fletcher.
