The Cult of NatureBoy

Kulanen Ikyo scores 4-part Hulu series

Our composer Kulanen Ikyo is behind the score for Hulu’s upcoming four-part true crime docuseries The Cult of NatureBoy, a project that dives into one of the most disturbing modern cult cases to emerge from the social media era.

Set to stream from April 28 on Hulu in the U.S. (including via Hulu on Disney+ bundle), the series examines the rise and collapse of Carbon Nation, a group founded in 2016 by Eligio Bishop - also known online as “NatureBoy.” What began as a digital-age spiritual collective quickly evolved into a tightly controlled community marked by coercion, manipulation, and escalating allegations of abuse.

At the heart of the series is the story of how Bishop leveraged social media to attract followers, encouraging them to abandon their existing lives in pursuit of what he framed as a Black utopia. Over time, his influence reportedly shifted from spiritual leadership into full-scale control, with former members later describing experiences of psychological pressure and violence.

A modern cult told through its own footage

Directed by Ben Zand and produced by ZANDLAND alongside ABC News Studios, the series leans heavily on first-hand material captured by members of the group itself. That archive footage is paired with interviews from former followers and online investigators who monitored the group in real time as it grew more volatile.

As the narrative unfolds, The Cult of NatureBoy traces Carbon Nation’s descent into what investigators and participants describe as a dangerous, insular environment - culminating in Bishop becoming the central figure in a high-profile and complex cult case.

The docuseries is produced for Hulu by ZANDLAND, with Ben Zand directing and Lucie Ridout serving as showrunner. Muriel Pearson is executive producer for ZANDLAND, while David Sloan serves as senior executive producer for ABC News Studios.
