Brothers Latham and Shelby Gaines are an art-music duo who record, perform, and exhibit under the name GAINES.
Their approach to scoring is unique: they transform found objects into amplified sound sculptures.
Their work straddles theatre, art, performance, and film scoring.
Academy Award-nominated actor and director Ethan Hawke came to see one of GAINES' first art shows, where they built instruments, played them - and then sold them after the show.
Two off-Broadway plays later, they were invited to score The Kid directed by Vincent D'Onofrio and starring Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, Dane DeHaan, Jake Schur and Leila George. They again built all the instruments - click above for a behind-the-scenes clip.
They will also be scoring Ethan Hawke's forthcoming feature (2023).
Their original score (and performances) for the Off-Broadway revival of Sam Shepard's, A Lie of the Mind earned the Gaines brothers a Drama Desk Award nomination for ‘Best Music in a Play’.
