The Composerworks’ New York-based composer Raphaelle Thibaut (pictured) will be scoring forthcoming Nat Geo series Secrets of The Whales.
The four part series will be narrated by Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning actress Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Avatar, Gorillas in the Mist), with Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron to serve as executive producer.
The series, which chronicles the whale way way of life, is set to premiere globally on Nat Geo on Earth Day, April 22, 2021 in 172 countries and 43 languages.
Secrets of the Whales explores the challenges and triumphs of whales in an ever-changing ocean. Filmed over 10,000 hours and across three years in 24 locations, the series is a personal saga, venturing deep into the world of whales to reveal life and love from their perspective.
Secrets of the Whales is produced for National Geographic by Red Rock Films. For Red Rock Films, Brian Armstrong and Shannon Malone-DeBenedictis are executive producers. For Earthship, James Cameron and Maria Wilhelm are executive producers and Kim Butts is associate producer. I was approached by four different agencies, each pitching half a dozen or so composers.
The thought was that we may even use a different composer for each of the four hours.
Raphaelle was the only one from the samples I heard that seemed to be offering the heart and soul we were looking for.
We needed someone who could compose to that emotion and work with it while still having the generosity not to overwhelm the pictures. After Raph nailed the first episode it was clear we didn't need anyone else and we asked her to compose for all four hours.
